When it comes to air conditioning in Brisbane, the vast majority of units you’ll find in homes are wall mounted split systems air conditioners.
Franky, we aren’t surprised they’re such a hit with Brisbane homeowners. After all, they’re relatively quick to install, provide enough cooling for most rooms of the house, and most importantly, they’re cheaper up-front.
Just like larger ducted systems however, if you want to keep your split system air conditioning running at its best, you’ll need to keep it serviced.
Just one question: how do you know you need air conditioning service? You aren’t an aircon expert, after all.
Luckily, there are a couple of things you can look out for!
“Do I need split system service in Brisbane?”
Probably, if you meet any of the following conditions!
If it’s been a year
As a general rule, we recommend that you book split system service once a year.
The reason’s simple: over the year, your air conditioning system continually circulates air, along with the dust, debris and bacteria air tends to carry.
Doubly so if your system uses reverse-cycle technology (that is to say, it doubles as a heater during the cooler months!)
While your system won’t suffer from mechanical failure after a year, there’s a good chance it could get clogged with dust and debris.
This builds up in your filters and coils, and can result in a range of consequences including:
- Less powerful cooling
- Higher energy usage
- Debris and dust being blown into your home
Cleaning filters on a regular basis is a pretty straightforward process that you can do on your own.
Of course, for more complicated split system issues, it’s best to leave it to a professional!
It’s taking longer to cool
It’s hot outside. The mercury’s climbing. You want to cool down, and fast.
Ideally, you should feel your split system air conditioning’s impact in a matter of minutes (something that our in-depth system design process helps with). But what if it’s taking longer than it normally does?
If that’s the case, it may be time for a service!
The causes of a drop in air conditioner efficiency are many and varied:
- Faulty parts
- Loss of refrigerant
Any of these problems can lead to your split system struggling to cool as quickly.
In addition to leaving you sweating, this also comes with another issue: it uses up way more electricity, as your A/C has to work extra long to provide the same level of comfort!
It’s making weird noises
You’re accustomed to the quiet humming of your air conditioner.
It’s the sound that tells you your split system air conditioner is doing its job – it’s the sound of comfort.
But what if your air conditioning system isn’t making that sound?
Worse, what if it’s making an unusual gurgling, rattling or grinding?
This should be an immediate sign that you need to book an air conditioning service, ASAP. No system should make sounds like that – if it does, it’s a sure sign that something’s gone wrong.
In most cases, these sounds are signs of mechanical failure or damage – something that requires a professional to fix.
You check the corners of your home. Nope, no signs of discoloration there. And you haven’t used the stove since last night’s dinner, so it can’t be that.
So, where could that musty or burning smell be coming from?
Here’s a tip: look up. In many cases, these smells could be coming from your air conditioner.
Let’s start with mould. In addition to filtering air, many split system air conditioners in Brisbane double as dehumidifiers. That means a lot of moisture gets trapped inside the dark recesses of your air conditioning unit.
Another air conditioning problem that comes with unwelcome smells? Electrical faults.
With older systems in particular, electrical faults can arise as the wiring insulation melts, or electrical components fail. Leave these issues long enough, and they’ll evolve from burning to full-on electrical fires.
Whether it’s mould or burning, if your split system is pumping out an odour that isn’t normal, it’s imperative that you book an air conditioning service, ASAP.

Your comfort depends on it!
No-one wants to suffer through a sweltering Brisbane summer without air conditioning.
While the worst of it’s over and we’re headed into cooler temperatures, that doesn’t make it any less important that your split system is maintained.
Commercial air conditioning service contracts
Say your home air conditioner goes kaputt. It sucks, but you can briefly live without air con, without suffering lasting consequences.
For businesses however, it’s an entirely different story.
