Why hire an air conditioning expert with an ARC licence

  • Air Conditioning South Brisbane

Needing a repair, installation, service, or refrigerant replenishment for your air conditioning in Brisbane?

Learn why you should only hire a professional HVAC technician who has a licence through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC).

Tri-Tech is one such HVAC company that can assess your air conditioning in Capalaba or any other surrounding suburb all across Brisbane.

We are fully licensed professionals who can help you install, maintain, and repair your HVAC systems – and who can replenish your refrigerant.

What is an ARC Licence?

The Australian Refrigeration Council has created a licencing system for both refrigerator and air conditioner specialists.

The ARC was conceived in 2005 by the Minister for Environment and Heritage to ensure that the fluorocarbons that these appliances often use are only handled, incorporated, and possessed by professionals.

According to the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations act, 1995, the ARC prescribes licences to ensure household and business safety.

There are many different types of fluorocarbons, including chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. Older fluorocarbons often have risk property, such as:

  • They have a tendency to deplete the ozone layer
  • They are greenhouse gases when in gas form
  • They are inflammable
  • They are toxic

This is why the Australian Refrigeration Council was created and the corresponding act.

Check if your air conditioning company has an ARC licence before deciding on air conditioning installation in Carindale or any other Brisbane suburbs.

What’s fluorocarbon?

Fluorocarbons are used as refrigerants in refrigerators and air conditioning, and is the chemical that transfers heat into cool air.

This chemical acts as both a liquid and gas in a HVAC system, and it’s this gas that evaporates into the ozone.

In the mid-1980s, scientists discovered that the use of fluorocarbons contributes to the degradation of the ozone layer.

By the 90s and 2000s, this prompted organisations around the world to administer methods of closing this hole, and one such way was by minimising the use of fluorocarbons.

Government bodies started to experience pressure to do the same, which is how the ARC was formed. Today the hole in the ozone layer has gotten so small that it is no longer a danger, thanks to organisations such as ARC.

But its greenhouse gas potential and flammability means that ARC’s role is still essential for your safety.

Refrigerants used today that also have thermodynamic properties include:

  • Freon
  • Ammonia
  • Propane
  • Carbon dioxide

Even the air conditioning in your car can only be assessed by experts with an ARC licence.

How do I know if my air conditioning team has an ARC licence?

In most cases, this will be displayed on the company’s website. You can also easily search for their licence at the Australian Refrigeration Council website.

Ask the business for their ARC number, search it here, and ensure that their first and last name matches up with this data.

The ARC has different licences according to:

  • If the company works with automobile, home, or business ACs
  • If the company works with air conditioning or refrigeration
  • If the company works with refrigeration, freezers, or both
