How air conditioning maintenance in Brisbane can extend your unit’s lifespan

  • ducted air conditioning

Like any other household appliance, your air conditioner has a finite life – it isn’t possible for it to last forever.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that you should just wait for your air conditioner to fall apart!

While all air conditioning systems will eventually reach the point where they need replacing, the key thing you can do is ensure your unit receives periodic servicing.

With proper air conditioning maintenance in Brisbane (and a couple handy air conditioning life-hacks), you can prolong the life of your cooling system and ensure it keeps you cool until the very end of its lifespan.

1) Give it a rest: control your air conditioning use

Obviously, there are going to be periods where you simply can’t afford to shut your air conditioner off (peak Brisbane summer, anyone?)

Outside of those periods however, it can be a good idea to give your air conditioner a break and instead rely on other sources of cooling.

That’s because the more you run your air conditioner, the more strain you put on its components and systems. This in turn leads to your air conditioner wearing out faster than it otherwise would.

Now, we aren’t saying you should limit usage to the point of your home becoming unbearably warm. We mean things like:

  • Setting the cooling temperature just one degree higher
  • Opening windows and shutting off your unit once night falls or the cool change hits
  • Ensuring your unit is not left on when no one is home
  • Zoning to help you keep only the rooms you need cool

2) Air conditioning cleaning

A dirty air conditioner doesn’t just impact the air quality in your home – it can also reduce the effectiveness of your cooling.

Dirty grills, clogged filters, and blocked ducts can impede the flow of air reducing cooling capacity. You’ll have less cool air making its way into your home.

To compensate, your air conditioner will be forced to work extra hard and will need to operate for longer to provide the same level of cooling.

Needless to say, this also has the undesirable side-effect of significantly shortening your air conditioner’s lifespan!

Luckily, this can be avoided with regular air conditioning cleaning. Not only does this extend your system’s lifespan, but it can also bring down your power bills!

3) Get the right sized air conditioning system

When it comes to air conditioning installation, effective system design (where we choose the most suitable size and system) is crucial.

And a large part of that means finding the perfectly sized air conditioner for your home.

If your air conditioner is too small or underpowered, it will struggle to give you the right amount of cooling. As a result, it’ll be forced to work extra hard and run for longer to keep you comfortable.

And conversely, a system that’s too powerful is equally as bad!

While bigger may be better for birthday cakes and pay rises, when it comes to air conditioning, it’s a major problem. Oversized systems have more stops and starts throughout the day, which generates greater strain than simply running continuously.

Both of these can prematurely wear out your air conditioner.

While this isn’t much help if you have an existing system, if you’re still in the process of planning your air conditioner installation, this is something you’ll want to think about carefully.

4) Use the thermostat

If you’ve gotten this far, you might notice one suspect in particular that shows up time and time again: overuse.

Excessive use is one of the main culprits behind premature air conditioning wear and tear.

As such, any strategies that reduce unnecessary air conditioner usage can also be employed to extend the life of your air conditioner.

One of the best tools to extend the life of your system? Your thermostat.

Most air conditioning systems nowadays come with energy-saving settings. Once the thermostat detects that the temperature has reached a tolerable level (around 25C for most systems), it’ll automatically shut your system off, preserving it.

You can also manually set your thermostat for specific temperatures or times. For example, late night and early morning are generally a lot cooler, meaning you can avoid air conditioner usage (or at least, set your thermostat lower) during these periods.

5) Book regular air conditioning service in Brisbane

The best way to increase your air conditioning system’s lifespan? Regular air conditioning maintenance and service, that’s what.

During our air conditioning service in Brisbane, one of Tri-Tech tech team will perform an in-depth analysis of your system both inside and out.

We’ll identify wear and tear in its internals, as well as potential problems that might rear their heads further down the line.

Once these problems are uncovered, your air conditioning specialist can fix them by replacing worn parts and fixing breakages and leaks.

Essentially, each routine service “refreshes” your air conditioner, which pushes back its eventual end-of-life and allows you to “max out” your system’s usefulness.

While there’s no such thing as a fountain of youth for air conditioning systems, with regular air conditioning maintenance and repairs, you can get pretty close!
