Created by Energex, PeakSmart is an innovative new technology that could potentially save you hundreds of dollars on your energy bill.
While the technology has been around for a handful of years now, a recent news report (which yours truly was a part of!) by 7 News has brought it back into the spotlight.
And frankly, there’s never been a better time either, with energy prices continuing to climb!
Introducing: PeakSmart
The purpose of PeakSmart is simple: to help you save money and reduce your energy consumption.
Specifically, PeakSmart does this by intelligently controlling the amount of air your air conditioner supplies for maximum efficiency.
The electricity grid operates just like the road network – just like there are periods where the roads are at their busiest, there are periods of peak demand for electricity, when lots of people will be using power at the same time.
For example, say it’s a hot summer afternoon – during these periods, all the air conditioners in Brisbane will come on at the same time, putting intense strain on the grid and leading to a period of peak demand.
It isn’t just electricity usage that spikes, however – so too do electricity prices!
These take the form of peak demand tariffs, which are charges that kick in during periods of high power demand.
Add that to how energy-hungry air conditioning systems are to begin with, and you could be left with a dramatically higher electricity bill!
How PeakSmart saves you money
By monitoring peak demand, PeakSmart adjusts your air conditioning usage to minimise how much you’ll have to pay.
During periods of peak demand, Energex will send a signal out to all PeakSmart-enabled devices.
When this signal is received, your system will cap energy usage during these periods similar to engaging your air conditioner’s inbuilt eco mode.
The result? Lower energy usage, more efficient cooling and fewer peak demand charges.
Won’t I be left uncomfortable, sweaty, and hot?
Not likely!
While PeakSmart does reduce your air conditioning usage, you likely won’t feel a difference.
PeakSmart devices only operate in periods of extreme stress – that is to say, only on the hottest of days.
According to Energex, these “PeakSmart Events” only happen a handful of times a year, and only for short periods. On most summer days, you won’t feel a difference at all.
Furthermore, good planning can reduce the need to operate your air conditioner during peak demand altogether.
For example, if the forecast predicts a hot afternoon, consider turning on your aircon early and cooling your home down before the weather gets worse.
That way, your home will already be cool, and you won’t have to use as much energy when the heat hits later on.
PeakSmart-compatible air conditioning installation in Brisbane
Did you know: many new air conditioning systems in Brisbane come with PeakSmart already fitted!
In fact, PeakSmart was designed by Energex in collaboration with many leading air conditioning brands such as Daikin, ActronAir and Mitsubishi Electric – all brands that Tri-Tech carries.
Buy a brand-new air conditioner from any of these leading conditioning brands, and you’ll already be able to reduce how much you’ll have to pay for your air conditioning in Brisbane.
Can PeakSmart be fitted to existing air conditioning systems?
Yes, it can!
While many new air conditioners in Brisbane come with PeakSmart built-in, not all of us use brand-new air conditioning systems.
Luckily, PeakSmart can be added to existing devices.
A PeakSmart receiver can be retrofitted to your existing air conditioner.
This receiver will receive information from Energex, and will then instruct your air conditioner to limit the amount of energy it consumes – no need for a total air conditioner upgrade!
Give us a call – we’ll determine whether or not your system is compatible, and install a PeakSmart receiver that will help you reduce your energy consumption.

Did you know: you could be PAID to save power!
Besides lower energy bills, installing a PeakSmart appliance can also give you an attractive once-off rebate depending on the size of your air conditioning system.
Cooling capacity | Rebate |
Less than 4kW | $100 |
4kW – 10kW | $200 |
Over 10kW | $400 |
Yep, that’s right – you could be paid to save electricity!
It’s also important to note that this is a per-system rebate.
What this means is that each PeakSmart device on your property is eligible for a payout – great news if your home uses a bunch of split systems instead of ducted air conditioning!
This rebate doesn’t just apply to air conditioners, either – the PeakSmart rebate can be claimed for any PeakSmart device, with allowances for up to 5 claims per household or business.
