How air conditioning repair in Brisbane can prolong your system’s life!

  • Air conditioning repair Brisbane

What do smartphones, university textbooks and incandescent light bulbs have in common?

The answer: they’re all designed to require total replacement every couple of years, as they are upgraded, improved, and modified.

It’s only natural to wonder how long your ducted air conditioner will last, and whether it will also fail.

Luckily, there’s good news: you can expect your ducted cooling system to give you many years of reliable service.

This week, we’re sharing some tips that can actually help prolong your air conditioning system’s lifespan – including air conditioning repair in Brisbane from Tri-Tech!

What influences ducted air conditioning durability?

Theoretically, your ducted air conditioning system should easily last a decade without issue.

In fact, it’ll probably last even longer.

Many of our clients hang onto their ducted air conditioning systems until it’s literally impossible to track down spare parts (we’re talking 20+ years!)

Of course, as with all things mechanical, it’s hard to pin down an exact number, as there’s a lot of variation in just how long your system will last.

If you want to prolong the life of your ducted system, you’ll want to think about…

How often you use it

It makes perfect sense, really!

A car that has more kms on it will obviously need more frequent in-depth service – the same is true for air conditioning systems.

In the past, ducted air conditioning systems tended to have shorter lifespans than split systems, owing to the simple fact that they typically run harder.

Before zoning became standard, owners of properties with ducted systems had to run the system in full, even if they wanted to cool just a single room.

Naturally, this led to accelerated wear-and-tear!

With zoning and other smart climate control options however (such as MyAir), homeowners are able to dramatically cut back the amount of heavy lifting their ducted system needs to perform, thereby prolonging its life.

How big your system is (or, why bigger isn’t always better!)

You’d think that a larger ducted system would be good. You’d also be wrong!

Let us explain…

While having an oversized system sounds like a good thing, it can actually lead to your system burning itself out sooner.

That’s because an oversized system cools much faster.

The problem is that your ducted air conditioner uses up the most energy and undergoes the most strain when it starts up.

The frequent stop-start operation characteristic of oversized systems puts more strain on your system than long periods of cooling.

This is why system design is so important, as it ensures that your system is the perfect size and capacity for your home or business, thereby minimising wear-and-tear.

How often you call for ducted air conditioning repairs in Brisbane

Just because your ducted air conditioning system has a problem doesn’t mean that its life is over – it might just mean it needs a little bit of TLC.

As with any other mechanical device, your ducted air conditioning system will need periodic repairs to keep it going.

Ignore the need for repairs, and you can expect to see your system struggle to make it through the year.

When is it time for air conditioning upgrade & replacement? hanging onto your ducted A/C no longer worth it?

Just because your ducted air conditioning system has lasted for 20 years doesn’t necessarily mean you should hang onto it for another 20!

There reaches a certain point where it’s simply no longer worth hanging on to an old ducted system, and it may be better to opt for air conditioning upgrade and replacement.

Air conditioning upgrade and replacement

It’s impossible to track down replacement parts

While manufacturers continue to make replacement parts available after newer systems hit the market, eventually you’ll reach the point where production stops and supply dries up.

One great example is the R22 phase-out.

R22 is an older refrigerant common in older systems which is on its way out in Australia due to its environmental impact.

As of today, it’s still available for purchase – however, supply is predicted to dry up in the coming years.

While it isn’t a “part” per se, it’s a great example of what we’re getting at!

Once you hit that point, it’s impossible to maintain your ducted air conditioner. Keeping it running at that point is no longer feasible, and it’s better to get your entire system replaced.

(Don’t worry, we’ll do our best to re-use as much of your existing ductwork as possible to reduce your air conditioning replacement cost!)

Air conditioning replacement becomes cheaper than repairs at a point

Ducted air conditioning repairs are cheaper than total replacement… to a point, that is.

Older systems (generally speaking) come with bigger problems.

And that means bigger, more frequent, and more expensive repairs. At some point, these cons start outweighing the pros, and air conditioning replacement becomes the wiser solution.

How do you know you’ve reached that point? Our mobile tech team will tell you!

We’ll tell you if you’re reaching the point of diminishing returns (when the costs of repair outweigh the savings that come with maintaining your system), and when you should start thinking about replacement.

When new tech leaves your old system in the dust

Air conditioning is a rapidly developing field. New tech is hitting the market all the time.

And in many cases, this new tech can leave older systems in the dust!

Oftentimes, this new technology can’t be retrofitted into an existing older system. If you want to enjoy the benefits, you’ll need to upgrade to a new system.

An example of this is Mitsubishi Electric Wi-Fi Control.

This is an innovative, high-tech system that allows you to control your ducted air conditioning (and even some split-systems) remotely with your smartphone.

Wi-Fi control can be retrofitted into existing Mitsubishi Electric systems… to a point. If your system is older than the cutoff, you’re out of luck.

The only way to enjoy this innovation is an air conditioning upgrade!
