How a lack of air conditioning hurts Brisbane schools (& students)

  • air conditioning systems for schools

When you look at schools to send your kids to, what do you look at?

Chances are your attention drifts to:

  • How big the classrooms are
  • The resources students have access to
  • The types of subjects offered
  • Extracurriculars
  • The condition of the campus
  • Teachers

One thing that many parents overlook? The presence of air conditioning.

Last month, we talked about how air conditioning in Brisbane schools benefits students.

In particular, we focused on how a cool and comfortable atmosphere is conducive to learning.

Naturally, that’s the main goal of ANY educational institution, be it the local primary school, a university campus or a small after-school tutoring business.

Today however, we’ll be approaching the same topic, but from a different angle.

Namely, we’ll be focusing on how a lack of air conditioning in Brisbane schools can negatively harm your child’s education

How learning environments affect student learning

The classroom atmosphere is a major factor that affects student learning.

That’s why it’s so important that schools don’t just teach, but also provide a conducive environment where all these things happen.

Even the best education, learning materials and school facilities become ineffective if the classroom environment distracts from your child’s learning.

The biggest issue? Extreme heat temperatures (especially during summer).

Fortunately, air conditioning in Brisbane schools can prevent each of these from happening!

Heat hampers student performance

Put yourself in their shoes – would you be able to focus if the room is approaching boiling temperature?

Of course not!

The research backs this up.

According to some studies, there’s a direct relationship between student performance and heat, with test scores dropping as the mercury rises.

How are you supposed to learn if you’re too busy melting?

It isn’t just students, either.

At the end of the day, teachers are human too. They have the exact same biological response to heat as the students they’re responsible for.

That is to say, they’ll also struggle in the heat. That leads to less effective teaching, and less ideal student outcomes.

The natural solution? Air conditioning in Brisbane!

Not just heat – what about humidity?

The heat is one thing – humidity? That’s a whole other can of worms!

While things don’t get quite as muggy in Brisbane as they do further north, things can still get quite humid here.

Just like heat, some studies suggest that students’ academic performance declines in places with higher humidity.

Humid classrooms are not suitable for learning, thus affecting interest, alertness and increasing distractions in class.

High humidity has been linked to feelings of sleepiness and lethargy, both of which make it difficult to concentrate.

Not only that, but humidity also interferes with our ability to sweat, effectively knocking out the body’s natural climate control.

And that in turn dramatically increases the risk of heat-related illness (more on that later.)

Air conditioning in Brisbane can help with that too!

In addition to bringing down the temperature, air conditioning systems can also reduce humidity as well. In fact, that’s what they were initially designed for – the cooling was just a neat side-effect.

Long story short, air conditioning in Brisbane schools can help in ways other than just regulating the temperature!

The link between air conditioning in Brisbane schools and heat-related illnesses

  • Heatstroke
  • Fainting
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Seizures
  • Heat cramps
  • Hyperthermia

These are just some of the conditions that can arise when the mercury climbs too high.

Needless to say, you don’t want any of these things occurring while your child is at school.

Stop the temperature from getting too high, and you can stop each of these conditions and afflictions in their tracks.

Just another reason air conditioning installation is so important for Brisbane schools. School administrators, pay attention!

Improved air quality

Did you know? Around 11% of Australians live with asthma.

Even if your child isn’t one of them, there’s a good chance one of their friends is!

That’s why it’s so important that schools control pollutants such as dust, smoke, and other impurities, and keep the air as clean as possible to protect students’ (and teachers’) good health.

Luckily for you, modern air conditioning systems also double as powerful filters.

A good air conditioning system in your school decreases the risk of students suffering from:

  • Asthma attacks
  • Breathing problems
  • Headaches, fatigue and irritation
  • Other allergy-related conditions

Not only that, but air conditioning installation in Brisbane schools can also stop the spread of mould.

Remember how we mentioned earlier that air conditioning can dehumidify the air? Well, here’s the thing: you can’t have mould without moisture and humidity.

By removing this crucial ingredient, you reduce the risk of classroom mould.

Just another reason to be wary if you notice that the schools you’re looking at don’t have air conditioning installed in each of their classrooms.

Introducing: The Cooler Schools Program

If you’re a school administrator, you’re probably familiar with this scheme already.

If not however, we suggest reading on!

So now you know what might happen if your school in Brisbane doesn’t have air conditioning.

Now for a stat that will shock you: there are hundreds of schools throughout Queensland that don’t have air conditioning.

In fact, according to some estimates, the roll-out is still 10 years away from being completed!

To speed things up (and bring the benefits of air conditioning to teachers and students throughout the state), the Queensland Government has launched the Cooler Cleaner Schools Program (CCSP).

Essentially, this program provides grants to Queensland state schools to kit out classrooms, libraries and staff rooms with air conditioning installation and replacement, with the goal of finishing up before the end of June 2022.

The funding package of $477 million over the next 4 years will go a long way in making 650 schools and 10,000 classrooms cooler and comfortable for learning.

As part of this program, Tri-Tech’s mobile tech-team has been engaged by many schools not just in Brisbane, but in Ipswich, Gold Coast, Logan and beyond to provide high-quality air conditioning installation.
